By Michael H. Lawson

La Sarga Cave Paintings

The La Sarga cave paintings were discovered in 1951 and contain figures of hunters, animals and geometric shapes.

The caves date back 7,000 years to the Neolithic Period a time when man first learned to raise crops and keep animals.

Never used for housing the caves provided shelter for hunters who left testimonies of their life on the cave walls.

Enrolled in 1997 in the catalogue of Cultural Interest the paintings of La Sarga were declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO in 1998.

In order to promote the conservation and protection of the paintings, the area leading to the caves is fenced off.

The Alcoy Archaeological Museum is responsible for the site and offers tours on specific dates.
