Cervantes Air Raid Shelter

The Refugio of Cervantes is one of 25 shelters used by the people of Alcoy during air raids in the Spanish Civil War.

It is an underground shelter, stretching for over 100 meters, which now houses an exhibition of information and aerial photographs of the raids carried out by Italian aircraft based in Mallorca.

The Italians used three-engine Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 bombers to raid Alcoy seven times between September 20th 1938 and January 11th, 1939 killing dozens of civilians.

The exhibition also includes an interactive screen showing the military targets and a video featuring first-hand accounts from people who lived through the attacks on the city and their consequences.

The entrance fee is only 1 euro and worth checking out if visiting Alcoy.
