British residents in Spain must urgently obtain a new Spanish permit to be able to use their vehicles.
The problems for British residents in Spain continue due to the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union. Driving licenses issued in that country will not be valid in Spain from January 1 of next year, after having exhausted all established deadlines and extensions. Therefore, British residents here must replace the UK driving license with a Spanish license.
The United Kingdom effectively ceased to be a member of the European Union on December 31, 2020, thus making the trafficking agreements within the EU no longer valid. But the EU negotiated with the United Kingdom a Withdrawal Agreement that enabled a transitional period during which the rights of British citizens were maintained following the acquis communautaire, an agreement approved by both the European and British institutions.
Therefore, the European regulations on driving licenses continued to apply to permits issued by the United Kingdom until the end of the transitional period, December 31, 2020. This means that from January 1, 2021, the licenses issued by the British authorities authorized to drive in Spain for ten more months, only until October 31, 2021,
However, through Order PCM / 1161/2021, the term has been extended again to two more months, extending the permits until December 31, 2021, the date on which they will no longer be valid.
This means that as of December 31, 2021, British citizens who have been residents in Spain for more than six months will no longer be allowed to drive on their British license.
