After having beaten first division side Huesca 2-1 on Thursday night, Alcoy has hit the jackpot after being drawn to face La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid in the next round of the Copa del Rey. The last time Real Madrid played Alcoy in Spain’s biggest cup competition was eight years ago when now Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho was in charge at the Bernabeu. This time, Zinedine Zidane will be in charge of Los Blancos for what should be a very competitive game despite Alcoy only being in the third tier of the Spanish league.
The match will be played on either January 21 or 22 and will be the fifth time that both clubs met in this competition.
The last meeting dates back to the 2012/13 season when Alcoy lost 3-0 at the Bernabéu and 1-4 at home. Before, then they met in the quarterfinals of the 1945-46 season. In Alcoy, the blue and whites secured a 2-2 draw before losing 2-0 in the second leg in Madrid.
Copa del Rey matches are being played over one leg rather than the typical home and away fixtures this season.
