During several days in July of 1994, a fire burnt more than 10,000 hectares in the Sierra Mariola Natural Park.
And while the fire devoured acres of forest the worst was the loss of five lives when an aircraft fighting the fire crashed killing five of six people on-board.
The aircraft in question was from Portugal called in to help the Spanish fire crews battle the blaze.
When recalling the fire, corporal of the firemen Antonio Córdoba said: “it was a very big and very serious fire; the weather conditions were very bad at the time with a big heat wave covering the entire Mediterranean from Spain to Greece.”
“I also remember how upset we all were when we received the news of the plane crash.”
