Alcoy’s Via Verde to become part of a European cycling route

The Forest Firefighter Association wants Alcoy’s Via Verde to be included in a 5,900-kilometre long European cycling route.

The Cultural and Sports Association of Forest Firefighters got together for a day out cycling the Via Verde.

The Via Verde is the old railway line that used to run from Alcoy in the mountains all the way down to Gandia on the coast.

The aim of the cycling event was to try and get the Via Verde made a part of the Eurovelo 8.

The Association has appealed to the relevant parties that are involved in the process of including cycle routes in the EuroVelo 8 and hope that they can help speed up the process.

They also allege that “it is well known that this would have a positive impact on tourism in the interior of Alicante.

EuroVelo 8 also known as The Mediterranean Route, is a 5,900 km (3,700 mi) long cycling route that runs from Cadiz, Spain all the way to Athens, Greece.

Hugging the Mediterranean coastline, the route takes cyclists through 11 countries: Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece and Cyprus.
