Gunpowder explosion in Muro de Alcoy seriously wounds man

A 66-year-old man has had first and second degree burns on a large part of his body while manipulating a gunpowder canister.

The incident occurred at around 1.00pm yesterday (Thursday) afternoon in Camí dels Fontanars, in the Plana area of Muro de Alcoy, an area in which there are numerous chalets and cottages. The man, according to the information provided, was manipulating the gunpowder outside his house, when suddenly there was an explosion that has caused burns to a large part of his body.

The injured man was taken by an ambulance to the District Hospital Virgen de los Lirios of Alcoy from where he has been evacuated later by helicopter to the burn unit of the Fe de València due to the severity of the injuries.

According to the information provided the gunpowder, apparently, was in a boat that is often used for the arcabucería battles of the Moors and Christians, although the reasons why he was manipulating her are unknown.
