Emergency services were called out last night at around 21:15 when neighbours noticed the fire burning along the Polop River close to the Santiago Payá Industrial Estate in Alcoy.
Fire fighting personnel and equipment were dispatched from Cocentaina and Ibi as well as two forest fire fighting units who soon had the blaze under control.
As of now, there is no word on how the fire started.
In the last decades, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of wildfires in the Mediterranean countries with the vast majority of them caused by people being careless.
Following the larger than normal amounts of rainfall, we saw this past winter the area surrounding Alcoy is at a higher than normal risk for forest fires.
