The poster announcing the Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos 2019 shows a soldier on horseback who announces with “a shout of joy” the act of surrender after the Reconquista.
This has been defined by its author, Carlos Merchán, Salamanca-born painter who has called Alcoy home for the past 20 years.
“I did not want it to be repetitive, nor the same as always,” he explained in reference to the lack of common elements such as the Moor, the Christian or the image of the patron Saint George. “He is a corporal, a soldier who has battled and returned victorious to announce the surrender of al-Azraq,” he explained.
The poster has been predominantly painted in black and white to create the “illusion of going back in time”. Carlos Merchán has used the coal technique, worked with latex and scourer. “I wanted to be true to myself and my style,” he explained.
