A 4.0 earthquake is felt in Alcoy

The seismic movement of magnitude 4.0 was detected at 17.16 o’clock in the afternoon Sunday with the epicentre in Cabo de Palos, 10 kilometres deep off the coast of Torrevieja.

The seismic movement was noticed slightly in Alcoy according to the National Geographical Institute, where it measured 2.6 on the Richter scale.

Despite there being no damage the emergency service 112 of the Generalitat Valenciana received more than 30 calls in the first hour after the movement.

Southern Alicante Province is considered as being an area of high seismic risk, but you would have to go back to 1829 to find an earthquake of a stronger magnitude of an estimated 6.6 magnitude killed 389 people and damaged over 3,000 homes.
