As cold as it is now, we should keep in mind that spring is just around the corner. That is why people with allergies are already afraid that the moment will come when they get out of bed and can barely open your eyes or breathe.
Allergy is a response of the body to defend against environmental, food or topical substances that affect the immune system. It is a process in which the cells, in contact with the substance that causes the allergy, produce large amounts of histamine, which results in an adverse reaction.
The people at Finca Ecològica remind us that, apart from the medicines that we are already used to taking, there are certain natural alternatives to avoid the symptoms. There are certain plants that can help us, such as the pirigallo (snapdragon).
The pirigallo is a perennial herb that blooms from March to June. It is found in undergrowth, forest clearings, holm oaks, chestnut trees, pine forests, bushes and in soils of a certain depth. It is very rich in proteins, which is why it is a good pasture for livestock. In addition, its seeds contain more than 7% fat, with sacaros and raffinose. Its floral nectar is rich in glucose (about 0.4%), from which bees make very good honey.
It is a traditional culture in many Asian countries. It is also used in Western countries, where it is often known by its Japanese name: shiso. It contains high levels of rosmarinic acid, which is also found in rosemary and other plants. Rosmarinic acid has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic action. In Asia, doctors prescribe it for respiratory conditions, colds, flu and food poisoning due to fish. The extract of this plant has been used successfully for spring allergies and the oil of its seeds for asthma symptoms.
Flower of the Pirigallo
Recent studies indicate that pirigallo may be useful for severe anaphylactic reactions such as those produced by an allergy to shellfish, peanuts or bee stings. At Finca Ecològica we have been told that, traditionally, it was taken as an infusion with a spoonful of the dried plant for each cup, and then leave it at rest for 15 minutes. In addition, this plant can be used to generate mists and, thus, clean the respiratory tract. Although it should be taken into account that it may have a slight sedative effect in some people, so it must be taken into account in the driving or operation of machines.
Tip: If you suffer from seasonal allergies here is Spain we recommend eating locally made honey. When a person eats local honey, they are thought to be ingesting local pollen. Over time, a person may become less sensitive to this pollen. As a result, they may experience fewer seasonal allergy symptoms.
