STOWAWAY CONCERN on Ferries arriving from Africa
The number of young, unaccompanied youngster trying to reach Spain from Africa is on the rise.
According to the Guardia Civil, the number of young unaccompanied stowaways reaching the Port of Almeria in South-eastern Spain is on the rise.
During the month of October the Guardia Civil caught 31 people trying to enter Spain illegally, eight of whom were children travelling alone.
This brought the number of stowaways intercepted in Almeria to 117 so far this year. Many were found hiding inside vehicles carrying goods and in the trunks of passenger vehicles.
Particularly concerning to the Guardia was the number of people risking their lives by trying to conceal themselves underneath lorries in the wheel arches and even engine compartments.
All were apprehended by the use of sniffer dogs and subsequently given assistance.
