Electricity scam fraudsters arrested in Alcoy
The National Police have arrested two men in Alcoy for posing as electricity company employees. The two fraudsters, both with long criminal records posed as employees of the electricity company’s collections department.
The criminals would call unsuspecting businesses in the hospitality industry and tell them that their electricity was going to be cut off immediately unless they paid an outstanding bill.
When faced with the possibility of having to shut down their business while the problem was sorted out, all the businesses paid either by bank transfer or credit card.
Once the police were able to trace the fake payments they followed the criminal’s activities noticing that they enjoyed a life of leisure frequenting betting shops and nightclubs.
Both men were picked up by the police in a slot machine parlour where they also recovered several credit cards, mobile telephones and identity documents stolen from third parties.
