A British man was shot dead by Spanish police on the Costa del Sol yesterday after allegedly opening fire on the officers when they came to arrest him.
Police officers had gone to arrest the man at an aparthotel on Avenida Marqués de Duero in the Cancelada area of Estepona when the victim opened fire forcing the police to defend themselves.
The incident came about following reports earlier in the day of a man fleeing a car accident in Puerto Banus while carrying a firearm.
Police easily identified the man and traced him to the Cancelada aparthotel in Estepona.
When they arrived at the location they were immediately met with a volley of shots and fired back killing the man.
A police statement read: “The officers were subjected to several shots, forcing them to use their weapon to repel the aggression in defence of their physical integrity and that of third parties.”
The deceased was found to be in possession of two firearms and ammunition.
Sources who claim to have known the victim suggest the man had a history of drug trafficking and possession of weapons.
